Scout taster session report.

Following our time at the scout jamboree at Detling County Showground at the end of July and the first week in August and the comments made after the show, some of which I have attached here for you to read, we agreed to hold some taster sessions for the local scouts to enjoy.

We were delighted to have the support of Orchard at KIJ. As I said to AWGB and I really meant it, without your support the woodturning would not have happened at KIJ. Thank you for getting the support and I hope they all had a good time. The Master of The Worshipful Company of Turners was very impressed by all the items on display and thanked the Club for its help in promoting woodturning to the public and the young people, who they hope will take up working with wood in some form in the future.

All the Scouts, Guides and Leaders who had a go at turning, some more than once, all thoroughly enjoyed it and it was good to see the big smile on their faces as they left with their turnings. Due to the lack of volunteer turners we were unable to accommodate a lot of the young people and Leaders who wanted to have a go.

A big thank you goes to Chris, Fred & Keith, from me and Mike, who did a sterling job all week. Without their help and enthusiasm the event would have been cancelled. Once again, thank you for the support Orchard provided at the Jamboree.

So it was that on Saturday 3rd February we had our first taster session with two groups who came from Sittingbourne and Rainham.

This was the first of two we have agreed to do so far this year.

We had a very good day with a group of 25 made up of 20 scouts with girl scouts outnumbering the boys by one and five leaders.
The day consisted of three areas where the main objective was to show the group the basics of woodturning with a chance of a half hour hands on session for each of them.
As it was some managed a second session they were so keen. To keep them occupied while waiting their turn on one of the lathes Patricia Norton was showing a group the art of pyrography with a chance to have a go themselves which proved to be very popular and in another corner we had “puzzle corner” where Fred had made some wooden cut out puzzles to be solved.
Fred and Bert were in the side room giving the health and safety lecture (Dons we are not) and demonstrating turning pens and mushrooms etc. to small groups at a time.

A second session is planned for 3rd March but at the time of writing this the weather has turned nasty and the session has been cancelled and will be planned for another date soon. If any one else would like to get involved in this scheme please let Dawn know.
